Introducing the Note on Desktop Extension which allows for Hosts to easily and quickly leave a customizable and persistent message on a Guest's desktop.
Release version 1.0.2.

The GuestDesktopMessage.exe tool can be executed from the Toolbox either directly in Session or from the Host page. The message's default appearance and content can be set from the Web Resources section within the Appearance tab on the Administration page.
The message's contents can also be customized on the fly by clicking on the folded corner in the bottom-right part of the window.

Web Resources can be changed to brand the message to the Administrator's choosing. These resources include:

  • GuestDesktopMessage.Message.Title
  • GuestDesktopMessage.Message.Header
  • GuestDesktopMessage.Message.Body
  • GuestDesktopMessage.Message.TextColor
  • GuestDesktopMessage.Message.WindowBackgroundColor
  • GuestDesktopMessage.Icon
  • GuestDesktopMessage.Message.Image
  • GuestDesktopMessage.Message.ImageLight

I think this extension will be very useful. Thanks for creating it.
A couple notes:
1. The extension installs with the default title/text in another language.
2. I think my end users will be confused by the Edit button on their message. I would encourage a large OK button (which dismisses the message) where the current EDIT button is, with the real "Edit" button moved to a popout under the title icon. Or maybe just a right click edit option.

To respond to your points,
1. Yes, that is intended. The default values can be changed via the web resources mentioned in the OP of this thread. I couldn't decide on decent default values so I just used the typical "lorem ipsum dolor sit amet". I figured it was better than my original which is nothing more than just "text here text here more text to ensure it wraps correctly".
2. We debated the best way to approach this quite a bit. Initially the glyph in the bottom-right corner was clickable to enable an Edit mode but since that didn't really fit into anything else in the application we chose to go with the current route. I'll make a note of your suggestion within the issue for the V2, although I can't say with any certainty when we might get around to working on it.

needs to be a big ok or a way for the EU to save the txt to there desktop .

the edit button is very very confusing for the EU ....

Thanks for the feedback, version 1.0.3 has been released. This release no longer has the Edit/Cancel buttons but instead the content is configurable via clicking on the folded-corner image in the bottom-right corner of the window.

I have updated the description and the images in the OP of this thread.

Anyone else not seeing the .exe in the toolbox in session? It does appear in the "Run tool" from the host page. - Ignore this. The host page has the app at the bottom, session has it in alphabetical order and I didn't see it.

Also having difficulty customizing the application icon have uploaded a new small icon but it's defaulting to a small red icon.

@JoeW what specific setting are you trying to change? Can you post the icon image you are trying to use?

Found it... it only shows up under All Extensions... I'd suggest adding it to the Communication and Connectwise Labs groups... :-)

I don't have the SC admin level to do that, but from my side a tip (another quick option) to send a message to the user:


  • Java:

mshta "javascript:var sh=new ActiveXObject( 'WScript.Shell' ); sh.Popup( 'EY! COME BACK !!', 10, 'Title!', 64 );close()"

That was taking from here, and work charming (not permanent, need to adjust time):

  • Old cmd trick:

Even the old: msg %username% Message (windows command) is good enough with /w (wait for user) or /time:<seconds> Cool
(I guess this work only on professional Edition and Up, not sure, and mostly on Domain environment)

I tested both.

Personally, I have a tiny software (renamed, IDK old original name) that even play a sound until someone stop it from the other side.

Really pleased to see this addition. I always like to leave a message for our users when we carry out work out of hours (which we very often do in order to minimise inconvenience) for transparency.

However, a large proportion of our access clients are using Macs. Is Mac support for this extension in the pipeline? If so, do you have a rough timescale? I appreciate that this is probably way, way down the list of priorities.

Hey Scott,

thanks for this addon, but i cannot change the values. If i change "Web.en-US.resx" in ScreenConnect App_Extensions folder, the plugin says "Status: Load Error".
How can i edit the default values?

@spaxi modifying the extension's contents will cause the signature to no longer match the file so I would expect the load error to throw there.

You can modify the defaults by changing the Web Resources mentioned above from the Appearance tab in the Administration page.
